Galaxy Time
Space exploration is experiencing a global boom. We are on the brink of shifting our lives into space, but we lack an answer to one of the most human questions: What time is it up there actually? In order to find an answer for this essential question Samsung teamed up with the European Space Agency (ESA) and developed the world’s first time format for our solar system.
For this we had to rethink the aspect of time and its visualization. The watch face rings display the hours, minutes, and seconds of a planetary day while a full rotation of the inner dial signifies the completion of a whole planetary day. Within this setting we created a unique watch face for each of the 8 planets and Earth’s moon, based on numerous highly precise datasets scientifically researched by ESA. Our design approach had to be very flexible because the planetary times vary greatly. For instance, a day on Venus lasts 243 Earth days. Meanwhile, Jupiter's day flies by in just 10 Earth hours.
With Galaxy Time, we bring people closer to all the planets of our solar system. And who knows - maybe Earth won’t be the only planet we spend time on in the future.
